Learn not to waste, this Ramadan

All the food wastage is occurring mainly in hotels, as many have lavish iftar buffets (‘UAE urges residents to cut food waste during Ramadan’, Gulf News, May 23). So, that’s the first thing that could be reduced. A woman who runs a home efficiently will know how to cook for a guest without wasting. As for others, I think they should learn, because I make sure to teach my sons the value of food and show them that we are blessed with enough. I teach them to share. Also, by recycling, I teach them how to save the Earth. If one has enough food at home and your child still asks for something, get it for him/her on another day. It’s our duty to explain such things, because money that is hard-earned should not be wasted. So while food is fresh, distribute it to the needy.

Crackdown needed

These con artists have been a real nuisance for years now (‘Con man phones Police control room, is arrested’, Gulf News, May 23). Tough action should be taken against them. There should be a crackdown on people who also sell phone credit in the streets.

How do they get the numbers?

Finally, such con men have been caught! Hopefully, he will give out the names of the rest of the people he knows, who are doing the same thing. I remember I had just come to the UAE and hadn’t even spent one week in the country or taken part in any raffle draws, when someone called to tell me that I had won a huge sum of money. I told him to use it to buy himself food and that I didn’t need it. How they immediately find your contact information is appalling and unbelievable.

Hard to catch

The problem is that these people only make calls and won’t agree to meet. I actually called one man back to say I’d like to meet him and personally discuss this in detail so I could give him a share of the money. Perhaps his sixth sense told him he was going to get in trouble, because he just hung up the phone.

Report them

I have had numerous experiences with people like these. I just played along and wasted their call minutes and time, then I reported them to the telecommunications company afterwards.

Annoying calls

These people are so annoying. Whenever they call me (and it happens often), I just tell them to keep the prize money. They get so angry.

Catching culprits

Thank you, Dubai Police, for catching these criminals. I encountered them a few months ago, and complained to the telecommunications company about the call, but they weren’t very helpful. So, when they called again, I told them that if they keep calling, I would report them to the police and they stopped. Thanks very much to police officers, for being there to save us from these people.

Wasted time

I had a call like this within two hours of my arrival in the UAE, and after buying a phone at the airport. I played along with him and told him to hold on, while I went out to the ATM machine, then to the shop to get the credit. Funnily enough, he was gone.
