A beautiful show of tolerance this Easter

The Christian community recently celebrated the feast of Easter Sunday on April 16. During the Holy Week preceding this, I couldn’t help, but express my deepest appreciation and gratitude to the entire UAE police departments who were out there, in full force during this week protecting and providing security and ready assistance to the tens of thousands of Christian devotees attending the various services across all the churches in the UAE.

This is what religious tolerance is all about and the UAE leaders should be amply applauded for the freedom and religious tolerance they provide for people of all faiths and religion. I happened to be attending one of the many services on Good Friday at our Sharjah Church during the hottest part of the day and the police officers were out there exposed in the harshest heat controlling both the traffic and providing assistance, yet without the slightest hindrance of their presence to the movement of people. I truly salute our UAE leaders and the police. I want them to know that this gesture was truly appreciated and the Christian community remains eternally grateful to the UAE for their support and protection.

Destabilising the region with weapons

The US is now planning to take down another Middle Eastern country and accusing Syrian President Bashar Al Assad for the chemical attack in Syria (‘The West used colonies as labs for weapons. It’s no different today’, Gulf News, April 18). The US and its allies show that they are against terrorism. However, history reveals that they are actual war traitors and terrorists. In the past, America invaded Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and now exploring the reasons to attack Syria. It has been a policy of America and its allies to invade peace loving countries to maintain supremacy in the region.

The recent detonation of the ‘Mother of all bombs’ by the US near the Afghan-Pakistan border is a matter of deep concern. Over the past 30 years, Afghanistan has become a testing area for the major powers to utilise their weapons. Their ulterior motive is to keep the Muslim world engaged in various conflicts and destruction of infrastructure, heritage and natural resources to each other.

Today, the number one threat to world peace is the US and its allies who are involved in destabilising the Middle East. It is time to impose severe sanctions on the US, which is propelling the world towards World War III.

Not financially viable

It is not that young people do not want to have children, they are worried about their financial status (‘Choosing between a child or a career. People can’t afford both’, Gulf News, April 18). They want to climb the rungs in a career, have a handsome salary and financial security, own a house and have a bank balance that will lessen their worries and hence they can think of parenthood. Today’s young generation face inflation, job redundancy, stress and the financial crunch. Hence, they do not want to bring in a child into this world and give him or her a life of ‘coupon cutting’, that is bereft of luxury. Despite being in a stable relationship and a good job, many youngsters give priority to their career and financial security and keep the idea of having a family at bay in the beginning.

Setting an example

There’s nothing wrong with knowing your priorities and sticking to them. I respect any woman who has chosen the path she feels is right for her. For myself as a young person, I would like to spend more time taking care of my children and work less and we are fortunate enough that it is financially viable. However, I would also like my daughters to have a career woman in their life to look up to if this is one of the paths they so choose one day. I certainly looked up to my mother who worked.

They key to longevity

Emma Morano, the Italian woman is the last survivor who lived to 117 years is part of history (‘World’s oldest person dies at age 117’, Gulf News, April 17). It takes willpower and extraordinary strength to make any person live so long. A clear mind and a cheerful attitude is necessary to stay fit. The stress that we face in daily life has an adverse effect on our health and it leads to various ailments that shortens one’s life. A good lifestyle with the right choice of diet and exercise can help us live a long healthy life.
