Abu Dhabi Police show empathy (to go with picture)

I have been living in Abu Dhabi for the past 20 years. On several occasions I have had encounters with the police for various problems. I am very happy to say that the Abu Dhabi Police is so professional and fair. They handle situations with a lot of empathy and sensitivity. Abu Dhabi is an excellent place to live and work and the law and order is excellent here. I think that one of the main reasons for this is that the law enforcement is done by Abu Dhabi Police so efficiently and effectively and skilfully.

I thank and congratulate the Abu Dhabi Police for their excellent work and professionalism, which has contributed to the UAE being one of the best countries in the world.

UAE opens your eyes!

The amazing weather and awesome lifestyle is what makes me happy (‘Letters to the editor: What makes you happy in the UAE?’, Gulf News, December 1)! With the great Rulers in the UAE, we have a place of humanity, safety and security. It’s a great place for unity and respect for human life. We meet people from all over the world! It’s true that it’s a multicultural melting pot. Of course, if people come from the UK or the US or somewhere similar, they will be familiar with the terms ‘multicultural’ and ‘melting pot’, but they won’t really understand it until they arrive and see it for themselves. Be prepared for your eyes to be opened here in the UAE. That’s an amazing thing about here!

It’s exciting that we are part of history in the making. Things are constantly changing here, new buildings going up, new places opening, even the roads can change overnight as the development goes on, but it’s all part of the exciting work in progress. We’re right in the middle of it, living it as it happens.

The UAE is a very tolerant place. Many different cultures and there is respect for every religion. Everyone lives here side-by-side and happily co-exists.

UAE relates to all people

This place is happiness because it’s a nation where even foreigners can enjoy more freedom than what their home countries can offer, coupled with security and much more. The UAE has successfully implemented many of the best practices from around the world. These things make all residents happy.

Feeling at home

The UAE is the most beautiful, wonderful, peaceful country. The people are friendly and they are hardworking. The environment is very clean. You can see colourful flowers almost everywhere you go. You can do your shopping anytime, you can walk freely. There is such a high standard of security and police patrolling. You can really feel at home.

All the generosity

Everything here makes me happy. The UAE has given us all so much. Whenever I think about it, praise the Lord, we have a nice car, a beautiful home, savings and much more. I can’t name even one thing that the UAE has not given me. We thank God and we thank the UAE. The most valuable assets of the UAE are the Emirati families who are so generous and kind.

The 45-year-old jewel

The iconic four colours on faces, confetti, flags, decals. The nation cut its 45th birthday cake on Friday, and I congratulate the country and its eminent leaders. Not only has this wonderful nation integrated a diverse and multicultural atmosphere, but it has also been a melting pot for innovation, youth and industry. I’ve grown in this country, being here for the past 11 years and have proudly witnessed it blossom.

We are always, more than elated to celebrate such joyous occasions, and how. But what we ought to take care of, is the effects we may have on our surroundings. This is what happens more often than not in every merriment, in fact. Our patriotism may a times clouds our care for the reason we have such a large amount of love for this country. The beautiful landscapes, scenic deserts, wonderful parks and beaches, which are the jewels of this land! I encourage all readers to ask themselves whether leaving barbeques burning even after you’ve finished using it is really okay? Is littering the adorned park fine because you’ve been having so much fun?

In festivities to come, let’s take some action, be it carpooling, spreading awareness, or just being conscious.

Climate change causes

I am a sceptic when it comes to the cause of global warming. The fact that the Earth is warming is not a matter of dispute as far as I’m concerned, but the cause is. First, the Earth’s temperature is within the normal range of its fluctuation. That means that this is a normal occurrence.

Second, the Earth’s energy system is very large and very complex and at this stage of our understanding, we are not able to say “if you do this, this will happen”. So the declaration that adding carbon will result in the temperate rise is beyond our level of understanding.

Third, the Earth has been significantly hotter in the past – just ask palaeontologists – and that was not due to man’s emission of carbon. This means that an entirely natural phenomena is fully capable of causing the warming we are seeing.

Fourth, the temperature of the Earth has been warming very slowly and very steadily over the past hundred plus years. The steadiness of the rise makes it difficult (if not impossible) to identify something man has done that would be the cause.

I remain a sceptic with respect to man’s involvement in the temperature increase we are observing.

A lifetime investment

Quality education comes with a heavy price. In this modern world of challenges and concerns, education is one of the costly affairs for parents irrespective of which school their children does their schooling. The fact is that schooling is an investment and every responsible parent expects a return out of it. No educational institution runs for business reasons, as tuition fees being collected from students are the only revenue to meet expenses, though there are concerns of its handling by respective management committees.

A big chunk of the revenue from school fees goes to paying of staff salaries, mainly to the teaching staff. They must be paid well for delivering quality education and lessons, that too in an organised way. The return comes in many ways – apart from curricular and co-curricular activities, the students are also tuned to adjust well with other cultures and traditions.

School tuition fee must have been set based on various factors and it is felt in the reputation of the institution is also valued here appropriately. Yet, parents do have some reservations on assessing the quality of education that today’s generation enjoys.

At the same time, it is important to realise the fact that parents who seek admission for their children at international schools are not part of the ordinary community. The majority of them are earning good money. In most of the cases, their children’s education is also covered by their employer.

Education is for life.

Stopping childhood obesity

It is alarming to know the escalating rise of obesity among children in the UAE. Being overweight has grim consequences as it affects children’s overall health, happiness and is a huge financial burden on the parents as they may have to bear medical cost. Several reasons can be attributed for the obesity epidemic that has hit the younger generation. Genetics, environment, sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, too much dependency on gadgets and unhealthy eating habits have made today’s children obese.

If childhood weighty issues are not handled with care and caution, its effects can be devastating. Obese chiildren will be not only be a target of teasing and ridicule by their peers but obesity may lead to having diabetes, high blood pressure, heart diseases, sleep and eating disorders in later years. There is a possibility of obese children turning into overweight adults.

Childhood obesity can be best tackled at home through improved parental involvement, healthy dietary habits, following regular exercise regimen and restraint from overeating. It is a pivotal responsibility of parents to make their children aware of living a healthy life.
