A decision to cause chaos

There is no denying that the decision of the US government to recognise Occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital would trigger a surge of violence in the Middle East (“Trump’s Jerusalem move sparks global outrage”, Gulf News December 7). The status of Occupied Jerusalem is a core issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as both sides claim the city as their capital and therefore the announcement has created a dire situation in the region. The leaders of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, France, Germany and Turkey have implored Trump not to take action on Jerusalem. Most countries do not recognise Occupied Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and insist that the issue should be resolved under mutual negotiations. The announcement will be an impediment to achieve a long lasting peace agreement between the Israelis and the Palestinians. The Palestinians have warned that changing the status of Jerusalem would mean the end of those peace efforts. They also have warned of mass street protests, something that could easily erupt into full-scale violence. Countries should strongly condemn the decision of the US government to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Praise for Rulers

If someone asked me to describe the city of Dubai in simple words, I would say that such words do not exist. Hats off to His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. His vision cannot be matched. Hats off to Dubai Police as they deserve infinitive appreciations for keeping Dubai safe.

Great win and even better playing

On the eve of the Test series against Sri Lanka, no one gave the Indian cricket team any chance to fight. However, they dispelled all that and created jitters in our team in the first Test. The Nagpur Test match was won by India, mainly due to cricketer Murli Vijay, Indian team captain, Virat Kohli and our bowlers, who took almost 20 wickets among them during the series. After that, everyone thought it would be easy at New Delhi, especially after the mammoth partnership of between Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Though we should have won the Test match easily, as our bowlers were on a roll, our butter fingered fielders slipped up and we lost many chances. After the first innings lead, we expected Kohli to make a sporting declaration. However, the think tank delayed it for some reason and our erratic bowling enabled the Sri Lankan team to escape. Incidentally, I felt that our team missed a fifth bowler at New Delhi. Anyway congratulations to Kohli and his team for winning their ninth consecutive test series. I sincerely hope that they would create a new record by winning the series in South Africa. Of course, for that, our fielders should be agile to grasp whatever chances come to their hands, as it is catches that win matches!
