A black day for the world

The British government should unconditionally apologise for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in India. On April 13, 1919, soldiers of the British Army led by Brigadier General Reginald Dyer opened fire against unarmed men, women and children who were protesting against British rule in India. It was a black day, not only in the history of India, but also for the whole world. Now it’s high time the British government should apologise to the people of India and to the whole world for this heinous act from the West. This incident is still a part of school history lessons. It always brings about anguish, fear and a sense of pride when we think about those innocent people who lost their lives for the freedom of the nation. We salute these great souls. In 2019 after two years it will be a decade since this incident took place, now, although late, the families of the victims and people of India deserve an apology for all the atrocities that were done against them.

Not all that bad

Beauty contests like contests for male body-builders, is just one more entertaining feature of life (“Miss Universe queens to visit Philippines this week”, Gulf News, December 5). Besides, it generates business for cosmetics manufacturers, pharmaceutical companies, and so on. It is also another way for women to be motivated and alert about their health and well-being. Another benefit would be for those who are looking for fresh and unusual faces in modelling or movies.

The people pleaser

Donald Trump’s hasty move on relocating the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and declaring Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, is a totally irresponsible move (“Trump dared, so what are we going to do?”, Gulf News, December 7). He side-lined the UN’s stand on Palestine and the legal position and interest of the Palestinians. This is just nothing but favouring and pleasing Israel. This move by the US could harm relationships and break ties with countries supporting the Palestinian cause.
