My complaint is with regard to my experience of using a credit card from Emirates Islamic Bank (EIB). It started with the bank charging Dh10 as statement fee in the month of November, 2016, without informing me or getting my approval.

The type of card that I hold with EIB needs me to make a full payment every month, or else, there is a monthly fee of Dh325 that gets deducted. I have had this card for more than four years now and till date, I have cleared all my monthly payments on time. It was no different even in the month of November 2016, when I cleared all my pending payments, and since then, I have not used this credit card.

I was surprised when I got a message from the bank in the second week of February, 2017, wherein they said that due to non-payment of credit card bills for the past three months, they would forward my case to the legal department. When I checked my online statement, I came across Dh10 as statement fee, which they had started charging from November. Due to this fee, they added a monthly fee of Dh325 for three months and a late fee of Dh225 for two months, bringing my outstanding with the bank to nearly Dh1,600!

I logged complaints with EIB and they have mentioned that they cannot do anything about it. I have now decided to close my EIB credit card.
