Abu Dhabi: Overflowing trash from waste bins placed near kerbs and busy streets is raising a stink in Abu Dhabi neighbourhoods, residents have complained.

“The smell is unbearable. We have to cover our faces while walking past the piling trash,” said Ameen Mustapha, a resident who lives behind Zayed the First Street. (Electra Street).

“Most bins are left open and the foul smell is mostly caused by rotten food waste inside,” said Mustapha.

Eyesore

Another resident Vivek Ramachandran said the overflowing bins are an eyesore.

“That is what I see first thing in the morning from my balcony. It does not reflect well on the image of Abu Dhabi city,” said the banker.

Residents of the area said some parking lots are left unused because of the overflowing garbage bins next to them. “You cannot park and get out of the car. You will be stepping right into a stinking puddle,” said a man.

According to many, irresponsible behaviour by some people is also adding to the problem.

“People are supposed to tie their waste bags properly before throwing them into the bins. But unfortunately not many are doing it,” said Sulakshana, a housewife.

She said one can see foul-smelling slimy liquid leaking from the waste bins in her locality. “

The whole place is stinking with the liquid waste seeping out to the kerb and the road,” said Sulakshna. Cafeterias and restaurants at the Madinat Zayed area passed the buck to the authorities saying the trash bins are not emptied daily.

“It is not our fault. We do have food waste but we dispose of it as per guidelines. The stench is caused when the bins remain uncollected for the whole day,” said Rafeeq, a cafeteria staffer.

Tadweer (Abu Dhabi Waste Collection Authority) said that it is working with contractors to ensure the bins are collected on time.
