ABU DHABI: Here is some good news for all of you who are paranoid about what you eat. Starting next week, every food product at Spinneys will have a detailed history of its origin, thanks to a unique farm to fork traceability system.

The supermarket chain has roped in GLOBAL G.A.P, an international farm assurance programme, to label food products across all 51 Spinneys outlets in the UAE.

“All that one has to do is to visit www.ggn.org/spinneys and enter the label number mentioned on the food product. Within seconds the website will give a complete lowdown on how, when and from where the product was sourced.

In some cases, you can even watch a video of its journey,” says Matthew Frost, CEO of Spinneys Middle East.

Detailed information

“People now are more conscious than ever of the food they eat. This feature will not only provide them all the information they need to know, it will also give them a detailed overview of how different fruits and vegetables are grown around the world,” he said, adding that the cost of labelling will not be passed on to customers.

Besides fruits, veggies, poultry and meat, seafood, cheese and certain brands of chips and biscuits will also be labelled, enabling customers to trace their origin.
