Sharjah: The American University of Sharjah will host a 24-hour walkathon with a special luminaria or prayer candle ceremony for cancer patients this weekend.

The special event, organised by the Friends of Cancer Society, will see hundreds of prayer candles lit by participants of the first UAE Relay for Life, sending a strong message of hope to cancer patients. The relay is scheduled to start at 4pm on the university campus on November 17 and the candle ceremony will take place at 9pm. The relay will continue till the next evening.

The luminaria ceremony is open to all.

Those interested in taking part can turn up at the campus by 9pm on November 17 and decorate the paper bags in which the prayer candles are set in. They are free to specify names and jot messages to the people they wish to dedicate the candles to.

The funds raised through the sale of candles will go towards cancer research.

Tickets for the relay, which is open to the public, are priced at Dh100 for adults and Dh60 for children below 14 years.
