Dubai: The summer months in the UAE are extremely hot, dry and humid. Over-exposure to UV rays can cause premature skin ageing, sunburn and even skin cancer. As the largest organ in the human body, our skin won’t be able to escape the harmful effects of the scorching heat especially when it is not given the attention it needs. According to a study, much of our sun exposure happens before the age of 21, and just one instance of sunburn can double the risk of skin cancer in later life, so it’s essential to protect children. The sun also causes loss of elasticity and lumpiness, which in turn creates saggy necks.

Top tips to have a sun-safe summer

1. Wear sun protection that suits your skin type and one that comes with a broad-spectrum protection from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 for adults, and around 40 for children, half an hour before going out in the sun is recommended.

2. Clean, exfoliate and moisturise your face with a cleanser and gently exfoliate using a soft sponge.

3. Use a restorative cream and lip balm with SPF for your lips and eye contour as they are sensitive and need care.

4. Bathe or shower with lukewarm water – rather than cold water – as it increases blood flow in the body.

5. Drink lots of water – at least 1.5 to 2 litres daily to stay hydrated.

6. Cover up with loose clothing and a hat, and avoid going out between 10am and 2pm when the sun is at its hottest.

7. If you forgot to carry an umbrella or wear sunblock, use soothing gels to avoid damage to your skin.
