Dubai: The Consulate General of Canada in Dubai is hosting a specially curated arts and cultural programme at Alserkal Avenue in Dubai on December 14 and 15 to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary.

Called Canada 150 at Alserkal Avenue, the programme is free and open to all.

The huge line-up of events begins with an after-school programme for seven- to 14-year-olds by the Jamjar on December 14 where Canadian First Nations artist K.C. Adams will host an Aboriginal arts workshop. The acclaimed multi-media artist will share the Ojibway seven grandfather teachings and guide students to create a pinch pot. Adams will hold a separate workshop for 13-plus children the next day.

Young children (six-14 years) can also opt for Parkour at Warehouse 82 where professional coaches will engage them in running, jumping, climbing and playing. Four- to 10-year-olds can join Reading Dogs to try some Canadian literature reading sessions with canines at the same venue. Warehouse 82 has a dedicated arts and crafts corner too.

Meditation

On December 15, Canadian yoga-inspired technical athletic apparel company lululemon is organising a complimentary yoga, breathing and meditation class at The Yard.

From 4 to 6pm the same day, The Yard will feature The Fridge which will present Ladan Hussein or Cold Specks who will explore her identity as a Somali-Canadian woman. Dubai-based Canadian act Nuvo Jazz Trio will be opening for Cold Specks.

The next two hours will be devoted to the screening of the animated film Window Horses. Hosted by Cinema Akil, Canadian filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming will present the feature-length film centring around the store of Rosie Ming, a young Canadian poet invited to perform at a poetry festival in Shiraz, Iran. Screening is free.

Families attending Canada 150 can also check out ongoing programmes at Warehouse 61 where the Aga Khan Museum in Toronto, Canada, has shed light on the artistic, intellectual and scientific heritage of Muslim civilisations. Henry Kim, director of the museum, will give a guided tour to visitors between 6 and 6.30pm on December 15.

Visitors can also see a group exhibition by Arwa Abouon, K.C. Adams, Babak Golkar and OCAD University alumni.
