The HealthBay Polyclinic at Umm Suqeim has launched an exclusive breast care and oncology complex ahead of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October.

The complex was inaugurated on Tuesday evening.

Dr Kamal Akkach, founder of HealthBay told XPRESS, “Everything concerning breast care – from primary care and family medicine, Obstetrics and gynaecology, surgery and oncology will now be available under one umbrella.”

He said patients at the breast care clinic will have at their disposal seven UK or Germany- board certified family medicine specialists, six obstetricians and gynaecologists and two surgeons.

“We also have the latest and highest quality imaging systems, including digital mammograms and 3D ultrasound,” he said.

Outpatients only

Dr Akkach said the clinic caters only to outpatients. “We already have good hospitals for breast care in the UAE. What we need are good superspecialty clinics like ours to help in diagnosis and treatment.”

He said international guidelines stipulate that women go in for a breast screening every two years after 40 and earlier if they have a history of breast cancer in the family. “From our experience, we find women don’t do in for regular screenings. But what they don’t realise is that prevention is the key.”

Breast cancer is said to be one of the most common cancers in the UAE, accounting for over 20 per cent of all cases reported. A sizeable chunk of this however can be effectively treated if the problem is diagnosed in the early stages.
