DUBAI: An innovative volunteering programme introduced by Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital (AJCH) is inviting residents to become superheroes.

Called Abtaal Al Jalila or Al Jalila Heroes, the programme requires volunteers to dress up as superheroes to help bring positivity and cheer to young patients.

Naser Hakim, senior manager — corporate communications at AJCH, said the programme was launched two weeks ago. “We are always looking to offer our in-patients with something they can connect with. We want to ease the pain of patients and make them smile,” said Hakim.

How to register

Interested volunteers can log on to the hospital’s official website and select from 15 categories, including juggling, balloon artistry and beat boxing. Some traditional activities such as singing and storytelling can also be chosen under the same tab.

The challenge goes beyond wearing capes and head gear.

“We expect volunteers to be available for at least two weeks at a stretch and help us in making our patients comfortable. Their stay at the premises should be memorable rather than depressing,” said Hakim.

The minimum age for participants is 16 years.

According to Hakim, AJCH has received close to 200 applications in the last 15 days and is in the process of shortlisting these entries. The program is expected to start by the end of September 2017. Accepted volunteers will also have a chance to work with the doctors that makes this a good opportunity for youngsters who are looking to pursue medical science.
