Dubai: Dubai With breast cancer month beginning in earnest, there are any number of events and activities lined up, just so that they create awareness about the urgent need for people over 40, even 30 these days, to go in for a breast check-up. The underlying premise is that should there be a case of cancer, the earlier it is detected, the better. XPRESS brings you a round-up of the many campaigns around town, but none of them will matter if you don’t get down to doing a self-examination and visiting your doctor. So while you soak up all the information, make sure the pink hype is not lost on you.
Warriors in Pink
Powered by Ford, this 21-year old campaign began with a photo shoot of select ‘models of courage’ at The Fit Republik, Dubai Sports City, in a boxing ring to symbolise the battles of breast cancer survivors. The models included Umaima Tinwala, Dikrayat Saleh, Jenny Holliday, Deena Ajith and Hanifa Meslem. The 2016 collection of the “Warriors in Pink” clothing line, which includes a range of items from scarves to shirts, was also introduced during these sessions.
Pink it Now
Zulekha Hospital launched a free breast cancer screening and mammogram campaign, Pink It Now, this week to advocate early detection and reduction of deaths from cancer. The campaign was inaugurated by Shaikha Lubna Bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development and Founding Board Member of Friends for Cancer Patients (FoCP).
Pink Ribbons
Pharmacy major BinSina is marking the Breast Cancer Awareness Month with its team wearing the pink ribbon all through the month. The pharmacy will highlight the causes, symptoms, risk factors, regular screening methods and emphasise on the need for early detection of the disease.
Pink October
Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island will turn pink on October 21 and 22 to raise breast cancer awareness. The Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts will donate Dh25 from each island activity to charity. While archery targets and activity cars turn pink, funds raised will be donated to a local breast cancer support group as part of Pink October.
Pink Month
Medeor 24x7 Hospital Abu Dhabi has organised a free breast cancer screening drive along with a self-examination guidance session. The hospital also offers free chauffeur services between 9am to 1 pm to all female visitors to the department of obstetrics and gynaecology as well as paediatrics.
Ignite Pink is Punk
The Ignite Pink is Punk event returns on October 7 at the Anantara The Palm, with all the proceeds going towards the Al Jilal Foundation. The event includes a 600-metre swim, 3km beach and pavement run, as well as a 400-metre swim with a 1.6km beach and pavement run. A 200-metre swim with an 800-metre beach and pavement run has been lined up for juniors. If you don’t like swimming, don’t fret — you can just run.
Pink Ladies Games
All-women teams of three to five will battle each other in five fun challenges on October 21 to inspire other women to adopt an active lifestyle. The half-day, feel-good programme has a blend of challenges including the make-over, waiters’ race and car tire. The campaign is in support of Pink Caravan.
Pink Breakfast
Online platform ExpatWoman is giving its readers the chance to have breakfast at the Burj Al Arab on October 16 (Dh330 per seat). Dr Buthainah Al Shunnar, founder and director of Al Shunnar Plastic Surgery Clinic, will share her experience in breast surgery, cancer reconstruction and other subjects to mark the awareness month.
Pink Cuppa
Afternoon tea with views of the Burj Lake at Al Bayt at The Palace Downtown takes on a special dimension during October with a special pink themed Breast Cancer Awareness initiative every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 2 to 6pm for Dh160 a head.
Pinktober
Hard Rock Cafe Dubai is uniting musicians, supporters and survivors in honour of the brand’s 17th annual PINKTOBER campaign. Throughout the month, the cafe will be selling limited edition Pinktober bracelets, proceeds of which will go to Pink Caravan of the Friends of Cancer Patients.
Pink Menu
In partnership with the Breast Cancer Arabia Foundation, La Cantine du Faubourg, a French restaurant in Dubai, is offering some of its menu’s classics in pink during October. Among them is a signature dessert — the Eton Mess — which features pink soft-crispy meringue and pink Chantilly whipped cream. Also on the menu are pink mocktails.
Organic Pink
The Atelier M Dubai, the lounge and rooftop restaurant, has created a special organic three course set menu starting from Dh199 to encourage healthy eating and raise awareness about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.
Pink Massage
SensAsia Urban Spas around Dubai will be donating some of its profits towards charity Friends of Cancer Patients. This includes 10 per cent of the proceeds from the Dh499 Bali chic massage and 100 per cent of the profits from its Dh299 neck pillows and essential oil sales.
My Pink Routine
