What brings you back to Dubai?

It’s the amazing response I get from the audience in Dubai. We have already sold out our first two shows, happening on August 3 and 4. So we have added an additional show on August 4. I love coming back to Dubai.

What can the crowd expect from your gig this time?

A lot of stories about middle class Indian families. I will be talking about my wife, children and parents and how I was brought up. I think a lot of people connect with this, and it always works.

How difficult is stand-up comedy when you know your audience is constantly judging you?

It is a tough job. If the crowd has attended my show before, it’s easier, since they understand me. But getting new people to laugh is difficult at first. Earning a laugh with newbies is always a challenge. It’s fun once I have managed to crack that.

Who are your personal favourite stand-up comedians?

My personal favourites are Dan Wilbur and Louis CK. In India, Vir Das is setting a new benchmark. I really like him. Some performers I enjoy are Rahul Subramanium, Kunal Kamra and Abijit Ganguly.

What is that one tip you would give to budding stand-up comedians?

Be yourself, don’t try to be someone else. Comedy works when you’re honest, and don’t write sets to impress people. Write to make people laugh, and that will take you places.
