Dubai: We all know that dates are packed with nutrients. They boast many health benefits, with the unmatched healing properties of several varieties being scientifically proven. Few, however, realise that dates can be eaten in myriad ways too. Sure, a date even by itself is a delicacy, but with a little innovation it can be a double treat.

Tina Memic, retail manager of the premium date brand Bateel, lists some must-tries. The recipes are simple, easy and tasty.

Date shake

Made with vanilla ice-cream, ruthab dates and milk, the date shake is a great booster. Opt for soy milk to make it a healthy option. It is filled with vitamins and minerals.

Sparkling date drink

A very healthy and refreshing juice, this is nothing but sparkling water, apple juice and dates. With no added sugar, it is very low in calories – 23kcal per 100ml (only half the amount of calories than orange juice). It’s perfect for the hot summer months.

Date biscuits

For the best taste, make the biscuits with fresh butter and French flour. Depending on the variety, use date paste, pecan nuts, pistachios or pine seeds. Sweeten the dough with date syrup instead of sugar, which makes it healthier than the normal cookie.

Mamouls

Traditional Arabic biscuits, that are super soft and melt in your mouth, these are created with different fillings: date vanilla, orange and pistachio paste. They can be covered with milk or dark chocolate too. They are made with pure butter and mahlab, the spice comprising the dried St Lucy’s cherry stone.

Date bread

Date breads made with sour dough, organic dates and pecan nuts are a delicacy. They must be naturally fermented and made the artisanal way. This gives them a rich texture and fantastic taste. Perfect to be eaten with fresh butter or olive oil and date balsamic vinegar.

Date nougats

Made from dates and fresh nuts, they are the perfect healthy snack if you just need a quick energy booster. Three variants can be made: pistachio, almond, cashew and hazelnut and assorted nuts.

Date chocolates

Hand-made artisanal chocolates with original cocoa from South America, fine cocoa butter and organic dates are difficult to resist. First chop the dates, mix with nuts, caramel, marzipan etc and covered them with fine milk, white or dark chocolate.

Filled dates

You can just fill up the dates with a variety of nuts. They make for a simple and sumptuous snack.
