DUBAI Racial profiling victim Hannah Fanni has hailed the UAE’s new anti-discrimination law which criminalises any form of discrimination on the grounds of religion, caste, creed, doctrine, race, colour or ethnic origin.

Definitive message

“This is a welcome development. The UAE has always been very clear on its policy of broad mindedness, inclusion and acceptance of people from all over the world. I am happy that the government is sending out a definitive message that hate and intolerance will not be allowed to sow its seeds in this country,” said the Nigerian woman who was featured in the XPRESS cover story last week

Fanni was turned out of a five star hotel in Dubai because of her skin colour.

The hotel management and staff involved in the incident later tendered a written apology to Fanni.

“I thank XPRESS for highlighting my story and bringing the subject of racism out in the open,” she said.

Penalties for violation of the provisions of the anti-discrimination Iaw include jail terms ranging from six months to over 10 years and fines from Dh50,000 to Dh2 million.
