A new short film competition is reaching out to young filmmakers in the region to vie for a chance to have their work showcased at the Small Screen, Big Film festival that runs from March 15-25.

Launched by the British Council and open to those aged 25 or less, entries must be filmed on a tablet or a smartphone device and should not be more than three minutes long. Submission deadline is January 31.

Twenty shortlisted films will be screened during the online festival, while four winning entrants will be given a chance to receive tuition and one-one-one mentorship from industry representatives from the UK.

To help filmmakers develop their entry, the British Council has partnered with IntoFilm, a British film-based educational charity, to create a step-by-step smartphone film guide, available on the festival website.

A jury of GCC and UK filmmakers will pick the winning entries. Jury members confirmed include Emirati director Abdulla Al Kaabi, Academy award and four time BAFTA award winning British filmmaker Asif Kapadia and English actress and writer, Alice Lowe.

Works can be submitted be in English or Arabic and can be live action or stop motion animation, and must be suitable for an under 18 audience. Films can be submitted on Britishcouncil.com.kw/en
