Dubai: The Dubai Police Officers team secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over Dutco to clinch the inaugural Late Lieutenant General Khamis Matter Al Mazeina Football Cup that concluded at the Dulsco ground in Al Quoz earlier this week.

Held as part of the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Community Sports Initiative launched by Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the tournament winners were awarded by Major General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police in the presence of Major General Obaid Muhair Bin Surour, Chairman of the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs in Dubai and Saeed Hareb, Secretary General, DSC.

Dutco earned the right to meet Dubai Police in the final after they had been crowned champions of the First Labour Sports Tournament organised by DSC in collaboration with the Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs in Dubai last month.

Hareb was pleased with the success of the initiative so far. “It has always been our endeavour to give our labourers unique opportunities to exercise while contributing to the overall wellbeing of the corporate sector in the UAE. The organisation of the special tournament helps us to take this initiative further,” Hareb said.

The Labour Sports Tournament that commenced with the football competition still has another five elements remaining — including volleyball, cricket, tug-of-war, badminton and basketball.

The cricket competition will be next up and will take place separately at the Dutco pitch in Jebel Ali and Dubai Municipality accommodations’ zone in Muhaisnah. The volleyball competition will be held from April 14-21 at Dulsco; the tug-of-war at Al Naboodah on May 5 and badminton at Dulsco from November 17-24.

The DSC arranges more than 80 sports events under the Hamdan Bin Mohammad Community Sports Initiative. This included the 24-Hour Walkathon around all landmarks in Dubai, a special running race for people above 70 years at the Zabeel Park and a second walkathon to coincide with World Diabetics Day.

The Hamdan Bin Mohammad Community Sports Initiative comprises several events and activities including running, swimming and cycling races at various places in Dubai.
