Dubai: Al Wasl may have gone joint second with their fourth straight win 2-0 at home to Sharjah on Thursday, but coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena said it was still early days.

Caio Canedo Correa assisted Fabio de Lima’s 14 minute opener and then added his own on 75 minutes.

After losing their opening game against Al Jazira, The Cheetahs have now overcome Al Dhafra, Al Nasr, Al Wahda and Sharjah.

“We can still do much more but we have to take care of people outside saying that we are a good team now that we are second,” said the Argentine former Boca Juniors boss. “This could be more dangerous than if they say we are a bad team. We know that in all matches we need to show the right attitude if we want to carry on like this, we also have to play well, but this is just the beginning.”

Sharjah are now seventh with two wins and three defeats in five. coach Giorgos Donis said: “We didn’t deserve anything from this game with this performance, it was very bad. We made easy mistakes and lost the game very quickly. I have to sit with my players to resolve our problems.

“We played without confidence or reason but I’m not the sort to blame my players, everyone has to look in the mirror and that starts with myself because I’m the leader and have the biggest responsibility but after that the players have to follow me.”

Correa ran in from the flank and passed across the goalmouth for De Lima to tap in the first on 14 minutes.

Al Wasl could have made it two just after the break but a long range shot from Ali Salmeen came back off the post.

Correa eventually did find a second for the hosts on 75 minutes however after picking up an interception in midfield and running the length of his half before a firing a deflected shot past the keeper.

Elsewhere on Thursday Al Jazira went top of the league with a 5-0 win at home to Bani Yas thanks to braces either half from Ali Mabkhout and Ailton Almeia before Mabkhout sealed his hat-trick before the end.

Al Dhafra also stopped a run of four straight defeats to get their first win of the season 2-1 at home to tenth-placed Kalba. Omar Kharbin scored two in the second half either side of Jociel Ferreira’s effort to lift the strugglers off the foot of the table.
