Dubai: Dan Petrescu is looking forward to building up on Al Nasr’s whopping 4-0 win over Al Shabab as the Arabian Gulf League (AGL) takes a small break for the next three weeks.

The AGL is scheduled to take a long break to enable national team commitments over the next three weeks. The next piece of action will be the Arabian Gulf Cup final between Al Shabab and Al Ahli that has been tentatively scheduled for April 1.

On Friday night, Al Nasr was the better side with Masaood Sulaiman putting them on the victory path when his 13th minute innocuous cross caught the inexperienced Nader Rajab off guard. Al Shabab crumbled a second time when a powerful corner from Mahmoud Khamis found the furthermost corner of the net, while substitute Ahmad Khamis made it 3-0 in the 68th minute following a perfect lay from returning Brazilian Santos Wanderley.

The Brazilian then made it 4-0 when he slotted from the penalty spot after Mohammad Ayed had accidentally handled inside the area during full-time injury period. The result made very little difference to either team with Al Shabab staying put in eighth place with 25 points, while Al Nasr continued in sixth position but with the addition of three points for a tally of 32 points.

“I am very happy about the win because we had lost to Al Shabab. But the result is not a real indication of what actually happened on the pitch. The game was close, and we got lucky with the first two goals. I don’t think we played our best game, but sometimes you have to take the luck that comes your way,” Petrescu said.

“I am happy for all the players, but especially for Wanderley as he scored on his comeback. However, I am sorry that the break is coming at the wrong time as we may tend to lose our momentum,” he shrugged.

Al Shabab coach Miroslav Djukic was left stunned with the result and with the inability of his team to garner valuable points. Since taking charge, Djukic has taken just one point from the five matches that he has been in charge of The Hawks.

“That’s the sad part about the situation at the club and this is what has been baffling. I am only thinking of working every day and to ensure we are on the right path,” Djukic said.

“Honestly, we didn’t expect so many goals. It is very difficult to come back when you concede such strange goals. We controlled the game and we did well to keep them from creating chances. There is only one way forward for us and that is to continue our hard work and avoid such big mistakes. With such mistakes it is very difficult to be competitive,” the Serbian added.
