Dubai: Organisers are targeting next month’s inaugural edition of the Dubai Women’s Triathlon as a ‘trial run’ before throwing it open to an international field by next year.

The Dubai Women’s Triathlon has been scheduled to be held under the auspices of the Women’s Sports Committee of Dubai Sports Council (DSC) at the Dubai Ladies Club (DLC), along Jumeirah Road, on November 3. Organisers have been pleased with the growing number of participants ever since registration was thrown open earlier this month.

The DLC has started an intense three-week triathlon camp to prepare participants in various techniques to successfully prepare for the big race on November 3. The first day of the camp was held on Tuesday and was dedicated to techniques for swimming, transition and running.

“We’ve got to get the basics right from this year itself. For all practical reasons, this inaugural edition is going to be like a trial run for us,” Lamia Abdul Aziz Khan, Deputy Chairperson, Women’s Sports Committee at DSC, DLC Director and Chairperson of the organising committee, told Gulf News, on Monday.

“Part of our vision at the Dubai Sports Council is to have an interactive community that has sports as a lifestyle. So this event very much fits the bill. It is with this aim that we are looking at a maximum engagement and involvement from the local sporting community by encouraging women of all nationalities to be part of the Dubai Women’s Triathlon,” she added.

The Dubai Women’s Triathlon will be held in three categories, namely a Super Sprint race (400m swim, 10km cycling and 2.5km run), a Sprint race (750m swim, 20km cycling and 5km run) and a Short race (1.5 km swim, 30km cycling and 10km run). The event will be open for individuals and teams with a special category being reserved for UAE women.

“Once we establish this event locally, then we can introduce it for an international field from next year,” she added.

The event on November 3 will commence with the swimming at the Dubai Ladies Club (DLC) and then move on to the cycling along the Jumeirah road from Union House Museum and Al Thanya Street and conclude with the run at the Dubai Water Canal.

Registration for the race has already commenced and will continue till October 30 through the official DSC website (http://www.dubaisc.ae/eng/DWT).
