Dubai: Boosted by their most recent success, the UAE may bid to host the Asia/Oceania Zone Group III Davis Cup next year.

“While Omar Behroozian and Mahmoud Nader have been the cornerstones, it is our juniors who have shown their capability this year. We all think that 2017 would be a good year to re-host the Davis Cup,” Sara Ahmad Baqer, General Secretary, Tennis Emirates (TE), told Gulf News.

“For some time now, the ITF has been after us to host Davis Cup in the UAE. The last time that we hosted [in 2013] we got a lot of compliments for our organisation of the event. That time it had been for Groups III and IV, but next year it will be only Group IV,” she added.

The board of directors of TE has already been in discussion to put forward a bid before the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to host the Group III competition sometime in March or early April. “That should give us adequate time to get our squad well prepared to play on home ground. We have a plan in mind that will see the players attend at least two overseas training camps before the next Davis Cup encounter,” Baqer related.

“We’ve been talking to the ITF as well and I am sure they will respond positively at Dubai hosting another Davis Cup encounter,” she added.
