Dubai: The third heat of the UAE Traditional 22ft Dhow Sailing Championships organised by Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC) unfolds off Mina Seyahi on Friday.

A fleet of more than 45 racing dhows have entered the overall championship, which will be decided after the fifth round later this season.

“This category of sailing was among the most exciting last season and we can expect a similar contest for top honours this year as well,” said Ali Bin Gulaitha, officer of the day.

“The dhow skippers have been watching the weather conditions closely over the past few days to make sure they have the best advantage. It is our job to ensure the race is run fairly and safely.”

The race starts at 3pm on Friday, with the first of the boats expected to cross the finish line near the Burj Al Arab 90 minutes later.

The operation team for race day involves about 60 people and 12 boats from DIMC, along with other boats from Dubai Police, Coastguard and a medical support team.
