Dubai: Saturday’s ‘Brave Martyrs Race’ in memory of the UAE soldiers who lost their lives in Yemen will serve as the season-opener of the 2015-16 watersports calendar in the UAE.

The race will be the opening round of the 43ft Dubai Traditional Dhow Sailing series and will be held off the Mina Seyahi waters of Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC).

The watersport calendar for the new season was formally released by Hezaim Al Gemzi, Acting CEO of DIMC, earlier this month and will see more than 25 events held leading up to the season-closing Al Gaffal Race between Sir Bu Na’air Island and Dubai on May 21.

“This year it has been decided to give extra prominence to our culture, heritage and our close maritime links,” Al Gemzi told Gulf News.

“We are pretty excited about the start of a new season as we have been getting more and more attention for the traditional classes of sailing and rowing. The authorities have been pushing us to find new solutions to forge unity and brotherhood and we are pleased with the way the sailing community has been responding to all our activities.”

One of the main highlights of the season will be the penultimate round of the UIM XCAT World Series to be held from November 19 to 21.
