Dubai: UAE Rugby Federation (UAERF) general secretary Qais Al Dhalai has been recognised by World Rugby for his services to sport.

A letter from World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper to Ebrahim Abdul Malik, the secretary general of the General Authority for Youth and Sports Welfare, read: “World Rugby is delighted to nominate Mr. Al Dhalai, a highly respected member of the Rugby family who has shown great leadership and commitment to the continued growth of the Game of Rugby in both the UAE and the Asia Rugby region, during his time as UAERF general secretary.

“Since the UAERF’s election as a full member of World Rugby in 2012, Mr. Al Dhalai has worked tirelessly to ensure the UAERF continues to be a prominent and active member of World Rugby.”

On receiving the nomination, Al Dhalai said: “It is a great honour for me, my fellow board members and members of the UAERF management to have received this global appreciation, and trust from World Rugby. I am extremely proud that the labour of our efforts over the past five years, since the inclusion of the sevens format into the Olympic Games and the subsequent formation of UAE Rugby, are coming to fruition and are being recognised by the highest bodies.”
