Dubai: Twelve-year-old Briton Leon Ferry will walk the match ball onto the pitch for Wales’ third 2015 Rugby World Cup group game against Fiji in Cardiff on October 1, after winning a challenge organised by logistics firm DHL and the Dubai Hurricanes rugby club.

Forty children took part in the competition held at The Sevens Stadium on March 20, which tested a player’s determination, perseverance, willingness to take on a challenge, reaction to failure and leadership.

Shahid Khan finished second and Ali Alipati came third and received World Cup branded merchandise. Winners were announced at Aquaventure Waterpark at Atlantis The Palm Hotel on April 10.

“I’m a big fan of the game and my favourite player is Wales’ Leigh Halfpenny, so it is a dream come true and I have to pinch myself to believe it,” said Ferry. “My Mum and Dad are equally happy as they are the ones that encouraged me to play rugby and so they are definitely going to go with me for this experience of a lifetime.”

Globally, DHL is giving children from 48 rugby playing nations the opportunity to deliver the official match ball onto the field of play at Rugby World Cup 2015 matches.
