Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton donned traditional dress and visited Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque on his last night in the UAE following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Briton posted two pictures to Instagram showing him wearing a kandora his trip to the stunning site in the capital.

“Ending my trip to #AbuDhabi at the beautiful Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque,” Hamilton wrote on the social media site.

“Easily the most beautiful building I've ever seen.”

Hamilton was the focus of attention at this year’s race because his number is 44, with the UAE about to celebrate its 44th National Day.

Although he was unable to complete the F1 season with a victory, losing out to German teammate Nico Rosberg, he still thanked his many fans.

“Thank you for all the support this weekend,” he wrote.

“I was proud to carry the #UAE44 colours and celebrate your 44th year.”

Hamilton, 30, became champion for the third time this year after winning 10 out of 19 races.

But it was Rosberg who finished the season in the ascendency, winning the final three races to leave the rivalry delicately poised ahead of the 2016 campaign.

Hamilton certainly made the most of his time in the UAE, possibly because he already had the championship in the bag.

Here he is out on a dune buggy before the weekend began:
