Dubai: Long-time supporter Lewis Hamilton has called on his childhood club Arsenal to invest more money in players, if they are to be among the more serious title contenders in the Premier League and beyond.
Hamilton, who picked up his fourth F1 Drivers’ World Championship title before the end of the 2017 season in Abu Dhabi this weekend, has been an ardent Gunners’ fan since he was five years old.
The Arsenal fan base of more than 100 million — reportedly the third highest among all football clubs worldwide — includes the likes of Queen Elizabeth II and athlete Mo Farah.
“I’ve been an Arsenal fan since I was five years young,” Hamilton told media on the sidelines of the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix on Thursday.
“They’ve definitely had a difficult year again!” he smiled.
Going into this weekend’s 13th round, Arsenal are in sixth with 22 points following seven wins and four losses. Manchester City are runaway leaders at the top with 34 points, followed by Manchester United (26), Chelsea (25), Tottenham Hotspur (23) and Liverpool (22).
“I am always hopeful that things will get better for us. All they need is more money [to spend on players],” Hamilton said.
