Abu Dhabi: Golf fans from across the globe have the chance to step inside the ropes and volunteer at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship’s 10th anniversary milestone event next month.

With applications for volunteer places now open, Championship organisers have seen hundreds of applications from within the UAE and further afield, as golf fans hope for a chance to see the world’s best tee off in the UAE capital.

Volunteers, who play an integral role in the Championship’s success, will undertake a variety of tasks during the January 15-18 event, including operating the leaderboards, being walking scorers and measuring the length of players’ tee shots.

“Every year we welcome more than 450 volunteers to the Championship,” said Jean Iggo, Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship’s Volunteer Coordinator. “It’s a unique opportunity for fans to see the pros up close and personal. Many volunteers even take time off work and travel to participate, flying in from the UK and as far afield as the US.

“This year we have seen applications flood in at a record-breaking rate, both locally and internationally, as it seems the whole world wants to be a part of the Championship’s 10th anniversary event.”

A significant portion of the volunteers at the 2015 event will be chosen from local schools.

Potential volunteers can register online via the Championship’s official website — www.abudhabigolfchampionship.com.

Organisers have lined up an all-star cast for the tournament, with the likes of world number one Rory McIlroy, number two Henrik Stenson, Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, Martin Kaymer and Matteo Manassero all looking for a slice of the $2.7 million (Dh 9.9 million) prize purse.
