Dubai: Ryan Moore, who is the leading rider in Britain this season, faces an anxious wait to discover the extent of an injury suffered on the opening day of Newmarket’s July Festival on Thursday.

Moore was injured when his mount, Newton’s Law, reared up and was trapped under the stalls before the final race.

Although he appeared to have escape more physical damage, Moore complained of pain in his neck and was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge where he has been undergoing further examination.

He underwent an MRI scan while doctors are also looking into potentially damaged vertebrae as a result of the nature of the stall’s accident.

His father Gary said in the Racing Post: “He had the MRI scan late last night, but he’s just waiting for someone to read the results.

“It’s been a bit long-winded, but they’re trying their best to sort things out for him.”

Moore, whose major wins this season include the victories aboard Gleneagles in the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas and the St. James’s Palaces Stakes, is likely to be sidelined for a while.

Tony Hind, Moore’s agent, said: “He had a scan yesterday and they didn’t find anything but they kept him in overnight and he will be having another precautionary scan just to make sure there’s nothing there.

“He’s fine in himself. He’s a very tough boy.”

Meanwhile, British bookmakers suspended betting on the jockeys’ championship due to Moore’s injury.

He currently leads the title race with 51 wins, in his bid for a fourth crown, with closest rival Silvestre de Sousa on 49.

Richard Hughes is on 42 and Paul Hanagan on 41. Godolphin pilots James Doyle and Williams Buick are on 40 wins each.
