Dubai: The Abu Dhabi Equestrian Club is set for an unprecedented day’s racing when it hosts the concluding races in the HH Shaikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival, including two world championship finales.

The Dh420,000 Group 3 Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup is the undisputed highlight of the six-race card with the Dh200,000 HH Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak World Championships being the main support race.

Run over the 1600 metres, the Group 3 Purebred Arabian Al Nahyan Cup has attracted a quality field of ten runners led by the Ernst Oertel-trained Shayel Aldhabi, a former winner of top races like the Emirates Fillies Classic, Arabian Triple Crown and Abu Dhabi Fillies Classic.

“They are two nice mares who have progressed with their racing,” said Oertel. “Shayel Aldhabi is dropping down markedly in grade and these are probably her optimum conditions. She should go close as she is in great form at home.

Commenting on his second runner Richlore, a three-time winner on the track, Oertel said: “Richlore is also working well and was a revelation at the start of the year, improving all the time. It is always nice to have two good chances in such a race.”

Other notable contenders include the Ali Rashid Al Raihe-trained AF Lafeh and the veteran Albar Lotois, a winner of seven races in Abu Dhabi since 2009.

The nine-year-old represents the crack pairing of Eric Lemartiel and Gerald Avranche.

The HH Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies (IFAHR) World Championship has attracted a field of 14 runners who will be partnered by some of the best female jockeys from around the world.

Belgium’s Anna Van Den Troost looks to have a leading chance with the Lemartinel-trained Bigg N Rich.

“The horse is fit and well and we are well drawn. I don’t know a lot about the jockey but have to be hopeful he at least goes close,” said Lemartinel.

Oertel has entered four runners with the ultra-consistent Molahen El Alhan providing Dutch jockey Jadey Pietrasiewicz with a live chance.

“He is in great form,” said Oertel. “We expect him to improve again this year so this looks a good starting point and we have drawn a good jockey.”

Earlier in the evening, 14 international young jockeys will aim to parade their skills in the HH Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Apprentice Jockey (IFAHR) World Championship, over 2200m.

Oertel is once again mob-handed with four runners, with Najm Alemarat tipped to shine in the hands of Frenchman Gianni Saffia.

Talented Arabian handler Majid Al Jahouri saddles two exciting runners in Ghalib and Merzal.

The card also petitions private owners in the final leg of the Wathba Stud Farm Cup.

Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the Shaikh Mansoor Festival and Chairman of IFAHR’s Ladies Racing Committee and Apprentice Jockeys & Racing said: “Sunday will be a great meeting for all the four races run under the umbrella of the Festival.

“The quality and variety of owners, trainers, jockeys - ladies and apprentices includes, is a reflection of the success of the Festival mooted by Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister of the UAE and Minister of Presidential Affairs,” she said.

“That and the support of Her Highness Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women’s Union, has lifted Purebred Arabian horses to a new high at the global level and we are in for some great racing tomorrow from the cream of the Purebred Arabian racing and endurance fraternities.”
