Dubai: Trainer Mark Johnston will be looking to maintain his dominance in the £130,000 (Dh808,168) Betfred Mile, the richest handicap run at Glorious Goodwood, when he saddles Heavy Metal in Friday’s high-class renewal of the historic race.

The Middleham handler has won three of the last five renewals of the contest, the showpiece event on Day Four at the Sussex Downs, and most recently with Fulbright in 2012.

Like Fulbright, Heavy Metal will run in the increasingly popular green silks of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.

A maximum field of 20 runners will be seen in action in a race that is traditionally hard to call given the depth of the field, and as a result retains its popularity with racegoers.

Friday’s card also features the Group 2 Betfred King George Stakes, Group 3 The L’Ormarins Queens Plate Stakes and the Group 3 Coutts Glorious Stakes (Group 3).
