Dubai: Luck deserted Dubai-owned horses on day two of Newmarket’s annual July Festival but Team Godolphin jockey James Doyle delivered the performance of the afternoon to capture the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes with Amazing Maria.

The winner, who was recording back-to-back wins having won the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (formerly Windsor Forest Stakes) at Royal Ascot, scored by a length from last year’s Group 1 Arlington victor Euro Charline, the mount of Andrea Azteni, while French 1,000 Guineas (G1) heroine Avenir Certain was a fast-finishing third.

A little over a length separated the first six horses home in a thrilling renewal of the mile event, with the Godolphin-owned Fintry (Mickael Barzalona) and Lucida (Kevin Manning) taking fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Doyle told Channel 4 Racing: “A lot of people thought it might have been a fluke at Ascot, but I could only say what I felt on the day and I felt she was a class filly.”

David O’Meara, who was notching only a career third Group 1 victory added: “She ran at Royal Ascot and was the outsider of the field. We didn’t think she was without a chance that day, I thought she could maybe be third behind Integral and Rizeena, but she won it and has confirmed today it was no fluke.

“She’s a proper filly and has got a Group One today, which is brilliant.

“It’s very special and it hasn’t quite sunk in yet. I suppose the Prix Rothschild would be the obvious race for her.”

O’Meara’s previous Group 1 successes came with Move In Time in the Prix de l´Abbaye de Longchamp and G Force in the Sprint Cup last year.

Royal Ascot form was also franked in the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (formerly the Cherry Hinton Stakes). when Richard Hannon’s Albany Stakes (G1) heroine Illuminate battled hard to deny the Shaikh Rashid Dalmouk Al Maktoum-owned Besharah by a nose with Brian Meehan’s Blue Bayou a shorthead back in third.

Godolphin’s Rah Rah, who led for most of the six-furlong trip under William Buick, was outpaced in the final furlong finished fourth, but was subsequently disqualified following a Steward’s Enquiry and relegated to the fifth position.

“She’s always been a very good filly, really sweet to look at and a pleasure to deal with. I think she’s as good as we’ve ever had — a very good filly,” said Hannon.

“When you see in her morning, she’s a pleasure to see and she’s about the prettiest filly you’ll see. She’s a dream boat to deal with and you’ll see plenty more of her, I hope.

“Going a mile won’t be a problem with her, she loves fast ground. She could do the whole lot — the Prix Morny and the Cheveley Park would be options.

William Haggas, who trains Besharah, added: “That was a great effort, she ran very well and obviously overturned the form with the horse that beat her in the Queen Mary (Easton Angel) and has improved for the step up to six furlongs.

“The obvious race is the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot, but we’ll see how she comes out of this.”

Godolphin’s Woodcraft, was denied a third straight success when beaten to third by Roger Varia’s Spangled in the opening race of the day, the Price Bailey EBF Stallions Fillies’ Handicap.
