Dubai: Godolphin launches a powerful two-pronged challenge in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on Friday, with Lucida and Fintry, in a bid to win the mile showpiece for the first time in its history.

Dubai-owned horses have a good record in the fillies’ contest with the Jaber Abdullah-owned Music Show being the most recent of ten winners to have captured the trophy, when successful in 2010.

However, in Irish-trained Lucida and French raider Fintry, Godolphin would appear to have their best chance yet of continuing Dubai’s impressive record in the Falmouth, a race named in honour of Evelyn Boscawen, the leading 19th century racehorse owner who was the 6th Viscount Falmouth.

After two rousing performances in the Coronation Stakes (G1) at Royal Ascot and the 1,000 Guineas (G1) at this course, the three-year-old daughter of Shamardal, takes on her seniors for the first time.

Lucida, whose career best effort came in the Group 2 Shadwell Rockfel Stakes last September, is primed to deliver another star performance for legendary Irish handler Jim Bolger.

Fintry, is a smart four-year-old who is trained in France by Andre Fabre. Also a daughter of Shamardal, she made all the running to beat former French 1,000 Guineas (G1) heroine Avenir Certain by half a length in the Group 3 Bertrand du Breuil Longines over a mile at Chantilly, France, on June 14.

Lucida and Fintry oppose seven other fillies and mares including dual Classic winner Avenir Certain, two-time Group 1 scorer and 2014 Falmout victory Integral and French Group 2 winner Bawina.

Commenting on Lucida’s chances Jim Bolger said: “Lucida is very well and I couldn’t be happier with her.”

Lisa-Jane Graffard, Godolphin’s French representative, remarked: “Fintry won very nicely last time out and comes into this race in great form.

“This is a very strong Group One and she is racing against some very good fillies and mares including Lucida, Integral and Avenir Certain, who might be better suited by the running of the race this time.”

Lucida, who is drawn in gate six will be ridden by Kevin Manning, while Fintry will break from stall two under former Dubai World Cup winning rider Mickael Barzalona.

Meanwhile Integral will bid to become only the third horse to score back-to-back victories in the race after Sonic Lady (1986-‘87) and Soviet Song (2004-5).

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained mare will also attempt to bounce back from a below-par run in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot, which she had won in 2014.
