Dubai: Renowned Godolphin handler Saeed Bin Surour continued to stockpile the big prizes at the Dubai World Cup Carnival when Promising Run scored a gritty victory in the Group 2 $200,000 Balanchine Stakes at Meydan on Saturday evening.

It was the in-form Emirati handler’s 13th success at the Carnival and added more firepower to the team he is steadily assembling for Super Saturday on March 10 and the $30 million Dubai World Cup meeting on March 31.

Promising Run booked her ticket to the traditional ‘dress rehearsal’ for the world’s richest day in racing where she will bid to emulate the brilliant Sajjhaa, who won the Balanchine en route to landing the $300,000 Jebel Hatta (G1) on Super Saturday, and the $6 million Dubai Turf (G1) on World Cup night.

Bin Surour confirmed that the same races would be Promising Run’s targets at the carnival and said: “Promising Run never shows a lot in the mornings, but, when I saddled her tonight, she was a little fresh.

“She was a bit keen in the race, but Pat Cosgrave knows her very well and looked after her — he kept her handy, which suited her. She has a good turn of foot and finished her race well.

“We will have a look at the Jebel on Super Saturday and then hopefully take her to the Dubai Turf.”

Like her predecessor, Sajjhaa, Promising Run should plenty of guts to win in a tight finish with defending champion Opal Tiara and the fast finishing Furia Cruzada, winner of Round 2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge last season.

Winning jockey Pat Cosgrave took note of his horse’s fortitude when challenged by two very good horses and said: “To be fair, they all came at her and she fought them off one by one and stuck it out well in the end.

“She was also carrying a penalty tonight and they usually get a horse beat, but she got the job done.”

Charlie Appleby, Godolphin’s co-trainer, also continued to sort out his squad for Super Saturday and World Cup day, with Baccarat, an impressive winner of a 1,200m handicap on turf, bound for the $1milion Dubai Turf on World Cup night.

“He is a real stable favourite who has a great record here at Meydan and has a good following with the crowd as well” said winning rider William Buick.” All being WEL he should be competitive in the Al Quoz Sprint.”

Should Baccarat be aimed at the turf sprint he is likely to face some top opposition headed by Ertijaal, Blue Point and Librissa Breeze.

Another horse who has carved a niche for himself as a formidable miler on the Meydan turf, is Salem Bin Ghadayer’s Heavy Metal, who was posting a sixth victory on the surface under French rider Mickael Barzalona.

Heavy Metal is now the international ante-post second favourite for the $1 million Godolphin Mile on World Cup night.
