Dubai: Dubai are doubly represented in a thrilling renewal of the Darley July Cup (Group 1), one of Britain’s most valuable and prestigious sprint races, which is the highlight of the final day of Newmarket racecourse’s July Festival.

Front-running Harry Angel bids to secure a maiden victory in the 1,200 metre contest for the mighty Godolphin stable, while Diamond Jubilee Stakes (G1) runner-up Tasleet represents former two-time winning owner Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance.

Shaikh Hamdan’s successes came with Muhaarar in 2015 and previously with Hamas in 1993.

An elite field of ten runners will go to post in the £500,000 contest including the brilliant unbeaten three-year-old colt Caravaggio, who took his winning sequence to six races when lifting the Commonwealth Cup (G1) at Royal Ascot last month.

The Darley July Cup presents the first Group 1 opportunity for the three-year-olds to take on the older brigade who are represented by 2016 winner Limato and Diamond Jubilee Stakes (G1) scorer, The Tin Man.

Clive Cox, who trained Harry Angel for Godolphin, told the stable’s website: “Harry Angel impressed me very much with the way he came out of the Commonwealth Cup and we are very much looking forward to running him again on Saturday.

“It was a great performance from Caravaggio at Ascot, but this is a different track and a different day.

“I am thrilled that Harry Angel is going to Newmarket in great nick and have been very pleased with him.”

The line-up also features Kevin Ryan’s Brando, the David O’Meara-trained Intisaab and Richard Fahey’s duo of Growl and Mr Lupton.

Fahey, who won the race five years ago with the 20-1 outsider, Mayson, commented: “Both Growl and Mr Lupton will need to step right up to the mark if they are to make much impact in the Darley July Cup, as it looks like it could be a vintage renewal of the race.

“I’m not worried about a repeat of the stalls problem for Growl, though he will use a rug in the stalls to keep him calm, just as he used to before he came to me.

“I would prefer slower ground for Growl as they are sure to go incredibly quick. Both my runners have small chances.”

The July Cup is the sixth leg of the of the Global Sprint Challenge series, preceded by the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and followed by Japan’s Grade 1 Sprinters Stakes.

Winners are unofficially acknowledged as the champion sprinter in Europe.
