Dubai: Saeed Bin Surour and Charlie Appleby, Godolphin’s principal handlers, are set for another busy week on the British flat with a feast of exciting contests framed for Ascot, Haydock, Kempton, Thirsk and York.

The highlight of the week is Saturday’s Group 1 Sprint Cup at Haydock, where regrettably neither of the Newmarket-based handlers, have a runner.

Darley July Cup winner Limato and last year’s scorer Twilight Son are the main attractions, with the latter attempting to become the first horse since Be Friendly to win successive runnings of the 1,200m contest.

Trainer Andred Balding has an interesting contender in Dancing Star while Ed Vaughan’s Mehronissa also looks to have strong claims.

Past winner Gordon Lord Byron, owned by Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, one of the most famous owners/breeders in India, is also in the mix as is Eddie Lynam’s veteran sprinter Sole Power.

The Group 3 Superior Mile Stakes is the highlight of Haydock’s supporting card on Saturday and could feature two Bin Surour-trained runners — Very Talented and Yattwee.

The David O’Meara-trained Custom Cut has not won in nine starts since September last year but could finally return to the winners’ enclosure.

Haydock also stages an interesting juvenile contest in the Casino Stakes, which features two of Frankel’s progeny — Frankuus and Cunco.

Bin Surour sends out Important Message in the Old Borough Cup Handicap over 1,600 and Kickboxer in the 1,000m Be Friendly Handicap.

Applbey is represented by Frontierman in the Knowsley Handicap over 2,800m and the beautifully named Fly At Dawn in the Listed Ascendant Stakes over a mile.

On Sunday Bin Surour and Appleby head north to York where they have some nice chances.

Bin Surour saddles Steady Pace in the Listed Garrowby Stakes over 1,200m and Dubai One in a maiden over five furlongs.

Appleby, meanwhile, is looking to run Bay of Poets in a seven furlong maiden and Baccarat in the Listed Garrowby Stakes over 1,200m.

Earlier on Friday, Bin Surour will head to Ascot for a competitive-looking meeting where he saddles the ante-post favourite Very Talented in the Stella Artois Handicap.

This looks an easier contest for the son of Invincible Spirit who makes his racecourse reappearance after being outperformed by all his rivals in the Group 3 Craven Stakes at the start of the season.

In Australia on Saturday, ex-England trainer Hartnell takes on the Sountern Hemisphere’s champion filly Winx in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick.

The son of Authorised, who raced out of Mark Johnston’s stables in the UK, is now prepared by Godolphin’s retained Australian handler John O’Shea.

“I couldn’t be happier with him, he’s made nice improvement since his first-up run,” said the trainer.

“The wet track won’t be a problem for him and the mile is more to his liking than the seven last start.”

Hartnell was a Listed winner at Royal Ascot and a Group 3 winner at Newmarket before being transferred to Australia where O’Shea prepared him to win the Group 1 BMW.

he ultimate goal of his current campaign is the Group 1 Metropolitan at Randwick on October 1.
