Dubai: Dutch trainer Karin van den Bos scored a big win in the HH Shaikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing Festival when Athlete Del Sol took the Wathba Stud Farm Copenhagen Cup at Klampenborg Racecourse in Denmark on Sunday.
With rain lashing the track, Van den Bos let out a huge sigh of relief as her stable star came on the outside to score under jockey Carlos Lopez.
The son of Dormane also won the HH Shaikha Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship in Hoppegarten in May and the Shaikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup in Stockholm on June 6. Now the seven-year-old has added the Wathba Stud Farm Cup — his third Festival win in three countries.
Labwah, the mount of Per-Anders Graberg, was second, while W Catch Cash finished a shock third under Anna Pilroth. Niraan, a relatively untested horse, was a noteworthy fourth for Fabienne De Geer.
“I am thrilled with Athlete Del Sol’s third win in the festival this year,” said a jubilant Van den Bos.
Lara Sawaya, executive director of the festival, said: “The Danish fans got a taste of some top class Purebred Arabians in this Wathba Stud Farm Cup race and the favourites Athlete Del Sol and Labwah finished 1-2.”
