Goodwood: Between them co-handlers Saeed Bin Surour and Charlie Appleby have amassed 23 victories at Glorious Goodwood and the duo that head the all-powerful Godolphin stable will be looking forward to having another prosperous week at Britain’s premier race meeting which starts on Tuesday.

Both the Newmarket-based trainers hold leading chances on the opening day, including the two featured Group 2 contests — the £300,000 (Dh1.4 million) Lennox Stakes for three-year-olds and over and the £200,000 Vintage Stakes, open only to juveniles.

However, it is the Hugo Palmer-trained Home Of The Brave, who also races in Godolphin’s famous blue colours, who looks the horse to beat in the Lennox Stakes, a race that was won by the stable’s Toormore 12 months ago.

James Doyle, who was on board on that occasion will partner Home Of The Brave, a winner of three of his last four starts including the Group 3 Jury Stakes at Haydock in May.

Godolphin are also represented by the Charlie Hills-trained Dutch Connection, runner-up in the Group 2 Summer Mile at Ascot while Richard Fahey saddles the stable’s third runner in the form of Chester victor Birchwood. Australian James McDonald rides the former with recent King George-winning jockey Ryan Moore set for duty on Birchwood.

Godolphin’s chief executive and racing manager John Ferguson said: “We have Home Of The Brave, who will love the ground and the track, Dutch Connection, who ran well in the race last year, and Birchwood, who goes there off the back of a Listed win at Chester.

“We have three happy trainers, and three good chances, in a high-profile race that is always competitive,” he told the Godolphin website.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, won this contest in 2009 with Finjaan and seeks a second success with Markaz, who is trained by Owen Burrows at Kingwood House Stables.

“He’s a nice progressive horse, but this obviously is a step up in class for him,” said Burrows. “There are some good horses in the race but we expect him to run well and think he’s our best chance at the festival.”

Appleby’s Superlative Stakes winner Boynton faces nine rivals in the Vintage Stakes, one of the premier two-year-old races of the season which has been won by several topclass performers including some who have gone on to Classic glory the following year — including Epsom Derby victory Sir and the exceptional Shamardal, winner of the 2,000 Guineas and Derby in France.

Boynton will have to concede 3lb to the rest of the field following his Newmarket success, with the Aidan O’Brien-trained runner-up War Decree, who re-opposeds, now better off on weights.

“Charlie said that Boynton has come out of his Newmarket race very well, and that he is now ready to take the next step forward. The Vintage is the ideal race for him,” Ferguson said, of the More Than Ready youngster who will be partnered by James Doyle.

Godolphin also run the Bin Suroor-trained Thunder Snow, who was sixth in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot behind Caravaggio.

Andrew Balding’s Chesham runner-up Isomer, Paul Cole’s Medieval and the Richard Hannon-trained trio of Repton, Hakeem and Larchmont Lad are other previous winners taking in the race.

Godolphin’s Second Wave, runner-up in the Listed Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot, looks to be the pick of five runners with Dubai connections in the opening Exchange Stakes Handicap.

Revolutionist, who won back-to-back races last month but disappointed in the John Smith’s Cup at York three weeks ago, races in the colours of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, who Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid is represented by Mutamakkin, winner of a handicap at Sandown last month.

Goodwood racecourse is housed within the tranquillity of the beautiful Sussex countryside and overlooking the Chichester Harbour and sea.
