Dubai: Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen jumped almost 100 places to 25th in the Race to Dubai standings after winning the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at 18-under-par, two strokes clear of Americans Brooks Koepka and Chris Stroud at the weekend.

The 25-year-old earned €708,171 (Dh2.9 million) from the victory, leaving him with 883,472 points overall, confirming his spot in the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course in Dubai from November 19 to 22.

Olesen, who spent three months on the sidelines following hand surgery earlier this year, was elated to win at St Andrews in Scotland.

“It’s been a very tough season for me and I would like to give a special thanks to my coaches, family and friends, and anyone who has been there,” said Olesen. “It was nice this week just to play three great rounds of golf — the first three — and keep it together in this last round.”

The top 60 players in the Race to Dubai qualify for the $8million (Dh29 million) season-ender, with a bonus pool of $5 million divided between the top 15 players in the standings following the final event of the season, as well as an additional $1,365,500 for those competing in at least three events on the Final Series.

Olesen will be hoping he can maintain his form for the remaining six events of the season.

It was also a fantastic weekend for Koepka, who has risen into the top 10 with his joint second-place finish. The 25-year-old, who finished level with Stroud on 16-under, earned himself 369,050 points, boosting him up to eighth from 13th in the rankings.

Chris Woods’ fourth-place finish has lifted him up to 26th from 29th in the rankings, so he will be joining Koepka and Olesen in the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy (3,012,000 points) still tops the Race to Dubai rankings, with Englishman Danny Willett (2,706,105) just behind.

General admission to the DP World Tour Championship is free of charge and can be obtained by registering online at www.DPWorldTourChampionship.com.
