Dubai: The third edition of the annual J9SOX Challenge, in aid of Motor Neuron Disease (MND), will be held at The Track, Meydan Golf Club, on April 30 from 3 pm.

The Ryder Cup style-format features teams wearing custom, one-off, brightly coloured socks, and has the players following a set of rules designed to put them well out of their comfort zone.

Julek Szczawinksi, organiser of the J9SOX Challenge said: “We came up with the concept to highlight the plight of MND and ALS sufferers. Playing under the maxim that “sometimes in life you don’t always have a choice” the players have no say in which team they play for and they have to walk the course in a pair of outrageously coloured socks”.

The tournament and charity dinner raises much needed funds for the J9 Foundation (www.joost.co.za) – the charity founded by legendary South African rugby scrum half, Joost van der Westhuizen, an MND sufferer himself. Joost will be travelling to Dubai to host the event and will once again captain his team against this year’s local captain of Industry, Kez Taylor, Managing Director of ALEC Construction.

Joost, now confined to a wheelchair, is a positive and vocal supporter of medical research into a cure for MND. He is also an important fundraiser for specialist care centres around the world. “I have to fight, not just for me but for all the other sufferers, and the support that we have had from the Dubai community for this cause has been overwhelming. For this I am truly grateful,” said van der Westhuizen.
