Dubai: Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger hit two eagles on his last five holes to fire himself into contention on day two of the DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates on Friday.
The 31-year-old started the day on two under par from an opening 70 and was level for round two through to the 13th hole after two bogeys cancelled out two early birdies.
But then he eagled 14 and 18 either side of a birdie on 16 to card a 67 leaving him tied for fourth, two strokes off the lead, at seven under for the tournament.
“It was a good finish, just what I needed,” said Wiesberger, who is 46th in the world and 11th in the Race to Dubai after four top five and seven top 10 finishes in 26 appearances this season.
“I think I played better golf yesterday [Thursday], but I just took advantage of those last five holes, which I didn’t do yesterday, and therefore the score is a lot better.”
With his late flourish, Wiesberger said he now has plenty of confidence for the last two rounds.
“Definitely, the way I played the last five holes, I didn’t miss a shot and that kind of gives me good feelings and good momentum for the weekend.
“I’m excited. The best 60 players are here and I don’t want to say that forces me, but it does encourage me to play well and end the season well.
“So far, I’ve done pretty good, so I’m looking forward to the weekend and I hope we can get some more of those eagles out there over the next two days.”
