Berlin: Werder Bremen slumped to a 1-0 home loss to Cologne on Friday, piling the pressure on coach Robin Dutt as the club remains rooted to the bottom of the Bundesliga.
Anthony Ujah’s 59th-minute strike was enough for promoted Cologne to climb provisionally ninth, while Bremen remains on four points after failing to win any of their opening nine games.
Ujah scored one minute after coming on as a substitute with a straightforward shot through Bremen keeper Raphael Wolf’s legs after Dusan Svento pulled the ball back.
“Dusan did brilliantly to set it up and Tony came along and put it in,” Cologne midfielder Kevin Vogt said. “We’re a team and we’ve shown that we can play a bit.”
Izet Hajrovic came closest for Bremen minutes later, when he hit the post. The home side, visually drained of confidence after its earlier efforts, looked incapable of claiming an equaliser after that.
“We lacked the confidence to turn the game around and I’m quite disappointed with that,” Bremen general manager Thomas Eichin said. “We didn’t manage to get the ball into the penalty area.”
Eichin was non-committal when asked about Dutt’s future as coach. “I presume so,” he said when asked if Dutt would be in charge for Tuesday’s German Cup tie at third-division Chemnitzer FC. Bremen fans cheered their team throughout the game but whistled the players after the full-time whistle.
