Dubai: Stoke City’s Charlie Adam feels he has enough football left in him to help chart a qualifying spot for Scotland at the 2016 Uefa Euro Championships.

After six rounds of play in Group D, Scotland are chasing leaders Poland and Germany in third place in Group D while keeping arch-rivals Ireland in fourth following a solitary-goal win at Celtic Park in Glasgow in mid-November last year.

Their sixth qualifying match against Ireland held on June 13 ended in a 1-1 stalemate away and that has given Stoke City’s Scottish playmaker enough reason to look ahead to one of two qualifying spots from the group.

However, Adam knows that one of the two, either Germany or Poland, will have to fall by the wayside within the next four qualifying matches.

“Scotland is in a good position at the moment and the 1-1 result away to Ireland last month was good for the morale of the team. The idea is to try and qualify this time and it is results like the one against Ireland that can come in handy for Scotland,” Adam told Gulf News on the sidelines of the Nad Al Sheba (NAS) Ramadan Sports Tournament.

Poland are at the top of Group D with 14 points, while former champions and World Cup winners Germany are in second with 13 points followed by Scotland in third with eleven points and Ireland in fourth with nine.

“Everything looks good for us at the moment. But we need to still play Poland and Germany. Those are the two tough games we have and we need to win these to assure ourselves of a berth next year,” Adam related.

A record field of 53 nations has been drawn into nine groups and the matches are set to conclude on October 13, with the top two from each group and the best third-placed side qualifying directly to the final tournament. The eight remaining third-placed teams will contest play-offs to determine the last four qualifiers.

A long-time player with the Glasgow Rangers, Adam was loaned out to Blackpool where he was recognised with a nomination for the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2011. Blackpool were relegated and Adam was transferred to Liverpool for a season before finding more stability with Stoke City in August 2012, where he has made 87 appearances, scoring 17 goals — the most memorable one coming against Chelsea last season.

“But at the moment I need to pay attention to getting back into shape for pre-season that starts this Saturday [July 11]. No one is guaranteed a place in the team and I need to fight for mine. I want to take the opportunity and do as well as I can,” Adam said.
