London: Sporting Lisbon’s English defender Eric Dier is joining Tottenham, the English Premier League club announced on Friday.

A statement from Spurs read: “We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement with Sporting Lisbon for the transfer of Eric Dier, subject to a medical.”

The 20-year-old can play as a defender or a defensive midfielder. He had a spell on loan with Everton in 2011.

According to Sporting, he moves to Spurs on a €5 million (Dh24.6 million) deal.

“The player didn’t want to stay on any longer here, even for the same salary [as offered by Spurs],” the club said.
