Match to catch

On February 8 this year, Liverpool hammered Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield. The Reds’ performance that day was the epitome of what took them so close to the title — they flew out of the blocks, swamping their opposition with attack after attack and were 4-0 up after just 20 minutes against a hapless Gunners side. Brendan Rodgers’ team have consistently failed to find that tempo this season and now find themselves in the bottom half of the table, with last week’s capitulation at rivals Manchester United seeing them fall to a new low. Arsenal’s defence remains as vulnerable as ever, but this time they have the brilliant Alexis Sanchez and overall look capable of getting a result at Anfield, possibly even sneaking a victory. Prediction: Liverpool 1 Arsenal 2.

Keep an eye on

Stoke have been frustratingly inconsistent this season, but they still love nothing more than bloodying the noses of the big guns at their intimidating Britannia Stadium home. Arsenal fell by the wayside a couple of weeks ago and it’s Chelsea’s turn to visit the Potteries on Monday. Jose Mourinho’s side, however, are more streetwise than Arsenal and feisty striker Diego Costa will relish the physical battle with Stoke’s bruising centre-backs. Prediction: Stoke 0 Chelsea 2.

For the purists

After reaching the final of the FA Cup last season and enjoying a brief run in the Europa League, reality is starting to hit home for Hull City and boss Steve Bruce. The Tigers look short on quality and have scored just two goals in their last eight matches, losing five and drawing three. They desperately need a win or two over Christmas as relegation is looming large on the horizon. Prediction: Hull 1 Swansea 1.

Showing form

Burnley are enjoying something of a mid-season renaissance as, after previously looking set for a limp return to the Championship, the Clarets have found a route to goal and have racked up 11 points from their last six matches to climb out of the relegation zone. Spurs will still expect to beat them at White Hart Lane on Saturday, but Burnley fans can be happy that their team is going in the right direction. Prediction: Tottenham 2 Burnley 0.

Need a win

Southampton may be lying in an impressive fifth in the table, but there are a few concerned faces around St Mary’s. After an incredible start to the season, they have now lost five in a row, scoring just once. The defeats to Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United were understandable, but in the last week they have lost tamely at both Burnley and third-tier Sheffield United in the League Cup. And with both Chelsea and Arsenal to face over the New Year, the Saints will be desperate to stop the rot against Everton on Saturday. Prediction: Southampton 1 Everton 1.
