Valencia (Spain): Levante celebrated being back in Spanish top-flight football with a narrow 1-0 victory against regional rivals Villarreal here.

The hosts on Monday stuck largely to the same line-up that secured promotion to La Liga, while injury-plagued Villarreal saw their tactics dictated by who was available.

Levante started aggressively in front of 20,000 fans at Ciutat de Valencia stadium, with Jose Luis Morales forcing a stop from visiting goalkeeper Andres Fernandez within the first minute of play.

After spending the early stages penned up in their own end, Villarreal threatened when Antonio Rukavina released newly-signed striker Carlos Bacca with a deep ball, though the ensuing shot deflected harmlessly off a Levante defender.

The second half featured plenty of offensive action, but little in the way of real chances until the 80th minute, when Morales was again thwarted by Fernandez.

Levante continued to press, however, and a desperate Rukavina brought down Morales in the area with two minutes left in regulation. Morales stepped to the line and converted to give his side the win.

In Monday’s other La Liga contest, Malaga fell 0-1 at home to Eibar and to make matters worse for the crowd of 28,000 at La Rosaleda, the goal scorer was Charles, who racked up 15 goals in 56 appearances during his 2015-2017 tenure with the home team.

The visitors were dominant from the start of the second half and took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute with Charles’ header.

Malaga showed more ambition from that point on, yet the payoff never materialised.

Digne helps Barca injured

French international Lucas Digne helped the injured in the aftermath of last week’s van attack in Barcelona that killed 13 people and injured over 100 others, Spanish media reported Monday.

The 24-year-old Barcelona defender, who lives near the central Las Ramblas boulevard where the attack took place, raced to the scene with napkins and water, daily newspaper El País reported.

“Digne helped the injured, applied tourniquets to arms and legs and cooperated with first aid until ambulances arrived and police requested, as a precaution, that Las Ramblas be evacuated,” the newspaper said.

Tourniquets are used to apply pressure to stop bleeding. Makeshift versions can be fashioned out of napkins, shirts or shoelaces.

“The Frenchman does not want to talk about it. He does not consider himself to be a hero for applying tourniquets to treat injured arms and legs,” sports daily Mundo Deportivo reported.

A white van ploughed through crowds on Thursday for more than 500 metres on Las Ramblas, leaving bodies strewn along the boulevard as others fled for their lives.

Police on Monday shot dead the suspected driver of the van, 22-year-old Younes Abouyaaqoub, at a village about 60 kilometres (37 miles) west of Barcelona.

Digne joined Barcelona from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2016 on a five-year contract.
