Manama: Fifa President Gianni Infantino has labelled recent criticism of Fifa and his leadership as “fake news”.

The world football leader invoked the same terminology favoured by US President Donald Trump at the Fifa Congress on Thursday.

“There is a lot of fake news and alternative facts about Fifa circulating. Fifa bashing has become a national sport in some countries,” he told the Congress.

Infantino didn’t cite any reports but it comes in the week ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert and Fifa prosecutor Cornel Borbely denounced the decision to remove them from their posts.

Infantino said “the new Fifa is a democracy it is not a dictatorship.” He added that “in the past many highly paid experts” were hired to help reform Fifa but “they simply rubber-stamped a sick and wrong system.”
