Dubai: Organisers of the Fifth Congress of the European College of Sports and Exercise Physicians (Ecosep) and Fifa Football Medicine Update are pleased with the huge response the event has generated.

The fifth edition of the two-day event will be held at the Mohammad Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), bringing together some of the top sports healthcare professionals from across the world on December 9-10. Sami Al Qamzi, the director general of Dubai Economy and chairman of the Fifa Medical Centre of Excellence Dubai is the chairman of the organising committee.

Held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the event has attracted an outstanding group of speakers from across the globe that will cover a range of topics within sports medicine and related fields. Organised by the specialised Fifa Medical Committee in coordination with the UAE Football Association, MBRU and the Barcelona Innovation Hub, participants stand to gain from the latest research and updates shared during the event as well as the vast opportunities provided for comprehensive learning in diverse disciplines of sports medicine, in addition to panel discussions, refresher courses and workshops.

“We are expecting nearly 500 professionals from all over for the event,” Dr Mourad Ghrairi, the chief medical officer of the Fifa Medical Centre of Excellence Dubai told Gulf News.

“We’ve received confirmation from team physicians of top clubs including Chelsea, Lyon, Barcelona and Real Madrid, who are all members of this organisation (Ecosep). Last year, it was held at the Camp Nou and this is the first time that they have agreed to have this annual event outside of Europe.”

The sessions will focus primarily on future challenges of team physicians who have had to deal with an increasing number of player-related issues on how to cope with muscle, ligament and tendon injuries in recent times. “The delegates will debate the future of sports medicine from various angles and aspects, and one of the sessions will be dedicated to local personalities who will be given an opportunity to share their experiences of working in the Gulf,” Dr Ghrairi said.

The organisers also plan to promote Fifa’s specialised Football Medicine Diploma during the event in Dubai. “This event would be an ideal platform to share ideas and we are expecting some more professionals turning up at the last minute,” Dr Ghrairi said.
